Craven
County, organized in 1712, was the site of North Carolina's first capital, New
Bern.
The
bear is one of the oldest religious symbols. It dominated Switzerland in
prehistoric times, and although now extinct is still considered the king of
beasts in the region. Even though the bears are imported, the city of Bern
maintains to this day a bear pit to remember the symbolism of its name.
New Bern was originally settled in 1710 by Swiss and German immigrants
who named it after Bern, the Swiss capital. The city emblem, as in old Bern, is
a black bear going up a golden road. This symbol appears frequently
throughout the city.
Downtown
New Bern sits on a point of land where the Neuse and Trent rivers come together.
It is believed the Tuscarora Indians may have had hunting camps and villages
here for thousands of years.
Union
Point Park is located at the foot of the Trent River Bridge. Union Point
Park serves as a city park and public dock. Boaters can anchor at the park to
familiarize themselves to the area and locate more permanent moorings.
The
New Bern Riverfront Convention Center is home to many special events and annual
trade shows. It has a large waterfront veranda overlooking the Trent
River. The Center is a great asset to the downtown area.
